As electric vehicle (EV) adoption surges nationwide, the necessity for an expansive charging infrastructure is paramount to accommodate the burgeoning EV driver community. Without adequate infrastructure growth, issues such as prolonged queuing times at charging stations and heightened range anxiety may deter potential EV adopters, hindering the transition to electric vehicles. Recognizing this imperative, RTC Derby has taken proactive measures by installing six electric chargers to cater to the evolving needs of its tenants and the broader community.
The UK’s embrace of EVs is palpable, reflected in the exponential growth of EV registrations. Factors propelling this surge include technological advancements, an expanding array of EV models, the implementation of clean-air zones, and an escalating environmental consciousness. From a modest 205,000 EVs in 2020, the UK’s Electric Vehicle adoption has swelled to over 1.27 million by October 2024, with EVs commanding a notable 26% market share of newly registered vehicles.

Understanding the spectrum of electric vehicles is crucial in grasping the diverse landscape of sustainable transportation. There are several types of EVs, the purest form are battery electric vehicles (BEVs), which rely solely on electricity stored in batteries for power. A more popular form are plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), which combine an electric motor with a petrol/ diesel engine and can be charged via an external power source or by the petrol/ diesel engine itself.
However, while the fuelling nozzles for diesel and petrol cars fit all makes, the same cannot be said for electric cars and their chargers. EV chargers vary enormously in compatibility, necessitating tailored solutions to accommodate diverse charging requirements. At RTC Derby, our EV charging stations can serve at least 75% of the EVs on the market in the United Kingdom.
The environmental credentials of EVs hinge on the source of electricity production. Notably, the UK’s energy landscape is progressively shifting towards sustainability, with Q2 of 2024 seeing renewable energy make up record 51.6% of the UK energy mix. Furthermore, the rising prominence of renewable energy sources underscores the eco-friendliness of EVs, contrasting starkly with the carbon footprint associated with fossil fuel-powered vehicles.
As well as tackling the problems of today, installing EV chargers helps Derby’s business and community prepare for the future. Research from Midlands Connect has estimated that by 2030 there will be 65,915 EVs in Derbyshire, which is a 440% increase from March 2024. There is already a shortage of EV chargers in Derbyshire, so to meet the needs of these EV owners there needs to be a 1,534% increase in chargers from 453 to 6,949.
Providing a convenient charging solution to tenants who already own electric vehicles means they can easily charge their vehicle while they are working, and they don’t waste time waiting for their vehicle to charge. Additionally, providing the chargers can act as a catalyst to tenants switching to an EV.
And RTC chargers will soon be available to the public charging network, helping other EV owners by reducing range anxiety as 47% of consumers believe there aren’t enough charging points. By adding our charging points to the overall number of public charging points in Derby, we’re also helping to reduce the queuing time – another bugbear of current EV drivers.
