How To Design Your Offices To Enhance Creativity and Productivity?

  • April 2, 2020

Your working environment will have an enormous impact on how you work, your ability to focus and your overall productivity.  This means the design of your office will have major importance regardless of whether you work at home or in a larger company environment. Here at RTC Business Park, we’ve pulled together some tips to help you make changes to your office environment so that you boost creativity and productivity for the best results in your work.

Lighting

Lighting is one of the most important factors in staying focused and feeling inspired to create. Bad lighting can cause headaches, fatigue, eye strain and irritability. Dark spaces can also contribute to depression. Having access to natural light or a view of the natural world (views of trees, flowers and lakes) and placing plenty of plants around the office will make employees feel happier and more eager to work.

Comfortable Furniture

Good ergonomically designed chairs, tables and workstations not only relax your body but they can also reduce injury-related absences, help maintain energy levels and reduce the number of errors that employees make during the day.

Room Colour and Art

The colours around us have an effect on our moods and brain function. Soft, muted colours have a different effect than hard, energetic ones. Natural colours like blue and green can improve efficiency and focus, while warmer colours can enhance innovative thinking.  Having art in the office will also enhance aesthetics and also serve as a point of pride for those who work around that art.

Movement and Seating

Sitting at work will be necessary but designing for movement around the office is key to productivity. Create a conducive workplace by including open seating, private offices and areas where interactions can take place.

Scents

Our sense of smell can affect our mood, mindset and thus our productivity. Adding scents to the area you work in can be uplifting. Some scents to include are pine (increases alertness), cinnamon (improves focus), lavender (helps to relax you during a stressful day) and peppermint (lifts your mood).

Reduce Clutter

By having clean and tidy spaces, you give employees the space to breathe and feel relaxed, which is definitely important in an environment that is looking to enhance creativity rather than stifle it.

When designing an office, or any workplace, you’re contributing to a key element of the employee experience. Your work will directly impact the productivity and purpose of your team, in a space they will spend much of their waking hours in.
